I received an e-copy of this book in order to review it, all opinions are my own.

Today I am reviewing the book Promised Lies by Marguerite Ashton. This book is the first in the detective Blanchette series. This series is a mystery series that follows the life and cases of Lily Blanchette, a homicide detective.

Here’s the Blurb:

Detective Lily Blanchette has a lot on her plate. Her sister, Celine, was murdered, her parents are on the verge of divorce, and after a whirlwind romance, she married a man she barely knows.

When the bodies of two young women are found, it is clear that the killer is the same person who murdered her sister, Lily sets out to find out who that is.

As the investigation comes to life, Lily realises that all is not as it seems in her life, who can she actually trust and who is she?

Lily Blanchette is a homicide detective and this is her first case as lead investigator. Her sister was recently murdered by what now appears to be a serial killer who kidnaps, assaults and murders his victims. When the bodies of two young girls are found killed in the same way as her sister, Lily is put on the case.

Meanwhile in her personal life she is having to deal with a broken relationship that led to her marrying on the rebound and the breakdown of her parents marriage.

I really loved this book! It was just how a mystery should be. The first chapter is a real gripper throwing you straight into the plot of the story. You find yourself in a hole, in a shed with two kidnapped girls, one already murdered and one trying to figure out why this is happening. Straight away I was hooked, who was the killer and why was he targeting girls in this way?

We then meet Colin Blanchette, Lily’s Father. You learn the back story of the death of Lily’s sister, Celine and that the new murders are similar to the way that she was killed six months previously. Over the next couple of chapters there are a few characters to get to grips with. Lily’s family, her co-workers, her ex fiance and her husband. This is a story that gives you lot’s of questions as you’re reading. It all adds to the suspense and mystery.

The killer, CtryGeek23 finds and targets the girls through social media. Although we meet him quite early on in the story his identity is not revealed straight away which I like in a mystery. I don’t want to know who did it too soon as it spoils the suspense!

I Don’t want to go to much more into the story as I hate spoilers but this was a really great read. Lots of suspense, great characters and a good length. The story doesn’t end too soon or drag on too long. I will look forward to following Lily Blanchette with her next case as the series continues!
