Toward the end of last year we finally got some paint on the walls in Mason’s bedroom. Mason has just turned 12 so getting the perfect pre teen boys bedroom that he is happy with now but is also going to continue to grow with him over the next few years was important. When we first started talking to him about it he still wanted all of his toys in there and said he wanted Fortnite as a theme. But he was on the brink of starting secondary school and I knew he wouldn’t want the toys much longer and although he still does like Fortnite I wanted to make sure any Fortnite details were in the decor like pictures etc so it can easily be changed should he finally reach the point of wanting no toys etc at all. Writing this is sooo hard! I’m not ready for him not to be my baby boy anymore, I literally just gave birth to him 🤣 but I know he is going to change massively in the next few years. He’s been in secondary school for only a term and I can see him growing up! This part of parenting is the hardest. He is right there in front of me and yet I miss him! I miss his chubby round cheeks and his little boy voice 🥲 Anyway! back to the actual subject of this post!
Before I show you what we’ve done so far to create Mason the perfect pre teen boys bedroom let’s have a look back at how the room was not long after we moved in.
These photos are from my upstairs home tour and a lot of things in here were still the same last year. Just less toys! And I can’t say that I’m sad to see the back of the hot wheels garage to be honest 😆 The walls were in bad condition though. You can’t see from these photos but there were so many cracks that needed to be fixed. I spent a lot of time of time doing that last year as well as giving all of the walls a base coat of white paint.
September last year is when we started with the paint and originally I was only going to start one corner but once we started we just kept going! When talking to Mason about colours he wanted red and as much as I wanted his room to be his choice I couldn’t get on board with red. It’s not a restful colour and I personally don’t really like red as a colour. After a lot of back and forth we settled on blue but there will be red accents/ decor in the final room.
This is the blue we went for which is called Stonewashed Blue and is by Dulux. It will go perfectly with the deep red that we’ve chosen for the accents and Mason was happy with the final choice too. It’s a deeper shade of blue that is perfect for a pre teen boys bedroom.
Is there anything more satisfying when decorating than getting that first bit of paint on the walls! My original plan was to do half and half walls so white on the top and the blue on the bottom with a red stripe. Once we started painting though we decided to change the plan slightly. Two of the walls are now full blue and the rest are half and half.
How good is this blue! So this corner will be where Mason’s desk goes and we also want to try and find a bookcase to slot into this alcove. We’ve added some lights around the bottom edge of the room that he can change the colours with a remote. Also ignore the play kitchen you can just see to the right 😆 that has been in his room since Christmas when Noa got her new one but it doesn’t belong here!
These are the two walls that are in the full blue. It feels really cosy as you come in.
The white on the top half of the walls is white cotton which is also a Dulux colour. We have also updated the blind in here which was through an Instagram collaboration with Blinds2Go. This is their Click2Shade blackout blind and honestly, if you need a new blind then head over to Blinds 2go and check out their Click2Shade range because I have never put up a blind so easily plus there is zero drilling and damage!
Some pictures will probably end up going on this wall above the football table. I’m also considering adding a peg wall to mount his Nerf guns. The peg wall could then be used for other things if he decides to get rid of the Nerf guns in the future.
The shelves on this wall are the same ones from before but now painted blue. We also put them over to the right of the wall so there is space to hang his TV.
The wires for the TV and console are an issue we need to sort! There are no plug sockets on this side of the room which is why we have the ugly extension lead displayed on the shelves right now 🤣.
I think the key to a good pre teen boys bedroom or any pre teens bedroom is to make sure it can grow with them. This blue and eventually the red will work with any Fortnite artwork we put up and with his Fortnite bedding (I couldn’t find this bedding online to link it but how cool is this fitted sheet!) too but it will also be easy to switch these things out if he ever wants to move on from them.
The next steps in here will be adding the red stripe and sorting the desk corner. Then it will be on to finishing touches with decor and art work. I will keep you updated though as changes are made. Progress is usually shared on Instagram first so make sure you are following me on there and on Tik Tok and YouTube too. I’m @Liannehempsallhome on all of them! Thanks for reading this post and I’ll be back with a new one soon 😊
