Hoover HF500 anti-twist review

I was recently contacted by Hoover Direct to see if I wanted to review the new HF500 Anti-Twist and of course I said yes. I had actually been looking into getting a new cordless vacuum so it was perfect timing for me and I’m always looking into the best ways to keep our home clean. With two young children, keeping the carpet looking fresh and crumb free is a constant battle which I’m sure some of you guys can relate to.

The Hoover HF500 was sent to me to be reviewed. This post also contains affiliate links and you can find out what that means here.

Hoover HF500 Anti-Twist Review

The Hoover HF500 Anti-Twist is the successor to the H-Free 500 and is part of Hoover Direct’s cordless range. It has upgraded suction power, 20% longer run time and a new “anti twist” floorhead which prevents hairs from wrapping around the roller. This is a feature that my husband was particularly excited about as he is always cursing my long hairs being all over the place including wrapped around the vacuum roller!

You know that meme that says “you know you’re getting old when you’re excited about a new vacuum cleaner” well I guess that makes me old because I was so excited when it arrived! I was actually surprised by how compact the box was and the 45 minute run time on the front caught my eye straight away because there is nothing worse than being half way through the vacuuming and it’s battery going.

Out of the box

One thing that impressed me right out of the box is that it came with a spare filter. I don’t know about you but I always put off washing the filter because the only time I think it do it is when I’m using it. If I need to vacuum I don’t want to have to wait 24 hours for the filter to dry but an extra one means I can wash it and pop the spare in straight away. Another thing I loved was the hook/brush to clean out the dust compartment, such a good idea! It also comes with a crevice tool, a wall mount, charging cable, a bag to keep all the attachments in and of course the motorised pets turbo brush which is apparently fantastic for removing pet hairs from your soft furnishings. As I’m not a pet owner I couldn’t test this fully but it was great at picking up my very long human hair from the sofa and stairs when I used it so I’m sure pet hair must be a breeze!

This Hoover is so light! Once I had put it together I was so surprised, this is the most lightweight vacuum I have ever used. We live in a three storey house and it’s no fun lugging a heavy vacuum up two flights of stairs so this is brilliant for us. It’s compact size also makes storing it easy too. It stands upright on it’s own, you can make it shorter to go in a cupboard or it also comes with a wall mount so you can hang it up.

How does it work?

Don’t let it’s size and weight fool you though! The HF500 Anti-Twist gets the job done. Once I had charged it for the first time I gave the living room a quick vacuum and you can see below what it managed to pick up. The controls are very simple and in easy reach near the handle. There are touch controls to turn it on and off, switch from carpet to hard floor and to put it on turbo mode. It has a light on the head which I always find handy when vacuuming under tables etc and it’s so easy to manoeuvre. It’s also quieter than other vacuums I’ve used which is fab for when I want to clean up in the evening once the kids have gone to bed.

Run time

For me this is a really important feature as we have a large space and I really don’t want to have to stop to charge halfway through my vacuuming. As an experiment I charged it once and waited to see how long the battery would last. I managed to vacuum up the entire downstairs (porch, hallway, living room, dining room, kitchen, utility and shower room) three times before I needed to charge again. On another test I was also able to vacuum all three floors on one charge!

Anti-Twist floor head

What I’m sure you all want to know is does the anti-twist floor head really work. Well I’m going to let the picture above speak for itself. This was taken after using the HF500 multiple times!

And then this picture was taken just today after two weeks of daily use which included the vacuuming of my bedroom which was the real test as that is where I dry my (very long) hair. As you can see there is only a few strands of hair wrapped around the centre where there is a break in the roller strip. This was easily snipped off in a couple of seconds and compared to my hair getting wrapped up in vacuums in the past this is absolutely nothing! I was dubious about the anti hair wrap working at all and it really exceeded my expectations. I can also see how much it’s working when I empty the dust canister as it’s visibly full of hair.

Overall this is honestly 100% the best vacuum cleaner I have ever used and would recommend it to anyone looking for a new cordless vacuum.
