Christmas is coming! I don’t want to hear any cries of it’s too early because Christmas doesn’t become magical all on it’s own. It takes planning and a little bit of hard work. But before we can even think about turning our homes into a winter wonderland we need to get started on the Big Christmas Clean!
Even if you managed to do a spring clean earlier in the year, that’s still six months since you tackled all those nitty gritty jobs that don’t get done on the day to day. This year I’m determined to deck my halls once they are clean and perfectly polished and to do that I need to make a plan.
This big Christmas clean that I’m about to get started on was inspired by the lovely Maria over at The Hewick’s Home (you can find her on Instagram, Tik Tok and YouTube). Last year she documented cleaning each of her rooms top to bottom over on her Instagram account. Everyone went crazy for it and she is doing the same again this year. I want to plan out the same thing for my own home. Working room by room to get everything done and ready to put up the decorations by the end of the month.
Planning the Big Christmas Clean
A task this size most definitely needs a plan so step one is to make some lists! You can of course use any old piece of paper or notebook for this but sometimes I just like to be a little bit extra so I’ve made a couple of free printables for you to download and use. I’ve made one with a traditional style, one a bit more fun and then finally one in black and white just incase you want a pretty list but don’t want to use too much ink from the printer!
I’ve completely split my lists up into separate rooms, landings, porch and hallway etc so that I have smaller spaces to focus on some days. Which gives me a total of 14 rooms/spaces to work on so I really need to get started! How you split your own home though is completely up to you. You might just want to do a list for upstairs and downstairs. Or maybe you want to class your kitchen diner as one room and just write one list for that where I have split mine and written them as separate lists. Here is my full list of rooms/spaces:
- Mason’s Bedroom
- Top Landing
- Noa’s Bedroom
- Middle Landing
- Bathroom
- Office
- Main Bedroom
- Hallway
- Porch
- Living room
- Dining Room
- Kitchen
- Utility Room
- Shower Room
Once you have the rooms you want to clean in mind you need to decide what jobs you want to do in there and in what order. How deep do you want to clean? Do you want to declutter too? Typically when I’m cleaning I like to work top to bottom in the room but if I was decluttering too then I would do that first. So as an example here is my list for my porch.
- Declutter and tidy the drawers
- Go through and clean out the shoe baskets
- Go through the coats, do they all need to be there?
- Empty and clean out the shoe cupboard
- Dust the ceiling for cobwebs
- Clean the light fitting
- Clean the windows and door
- Dust the surfaces
- Clean the mirror
- Sweep/vacuum the floor
- Mop the floor
Like I said before though, how you do your clean might be different. You work out the best way for you! I’m just sharing how I plan to do mine in the hopes that it can be helpful to you in some way 🙂
As I am writing this it is the 5th of November and I’m hoping to get this post live first thing on the 7th of November. If you want to clean along with me I’ll be sharing my progress over on my Instagram stories and maybe in a few reels too. I will also be sharing each of the room cleans over on my YouTube Channel so you can follow along and clean with me there!
I’ve left myself with very little time and I need to be doing at least one room each day in order to be done on time. I might not be perfect but I will share what I do get done and the quicker I power through then the quicker I can get that tree up!
If you are going to do the big Christmas Clean along with me then please do leave a comment here or over on Instagram or YouTube. I would also love to see if any of you are using the printables too! So don’t forget to tag me @liannehempsallhome in any shares. Let’s all use the hashtag #thebigchristmasclean on any content we share to help motivate and support each other.
If you’re desperate for Christmas content here on the blog you can check out these DIY Christmas Tree decorations or see how I made these Christmas Photo Baubles.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post and I wish you luck in your own Big Christmas Cleans!
