Viking World Letter Writing Day

Viking’s World Letter Writing Day

September 1st is World Letter Writing Day! Writing a letter is something that I have not done for a very long time. In this day and age of the internet and social media we send emails, tweets, texts and snapchats! Everything is so instant that the art of writing a letter, posting it and waiting for a reply seems pointless when you can just write on someones Facebook wall and they can see it then and there.

It’s strange to think that my own Children will never remember a time without the internet, without smartphones. I think I was about 12 when we first got the internet in our household and 15 when I got my first mobile phone and I find it hard to remember myself. They will probably never need to write a letter and the only letters they will receive in the post are bills, but maybe not even those, everything is becoming paper free. If you take a moment to think about it, it’s quite sad. Just think back to a time when sitting down to write letters to your friends who lived elsewhere was a weekly ritual. When you would be excited for the post to arrive to find out what news they had in return! Now we only get excited when the postman is bring our latest Amazon Prime delivery. 😀

The last time I can remember properly writing letters was to my school friend Julia Tuck (now Laver). I was 15 and I was going to Skegness (my now home) for the six week school holidays. I was stopping with my Nan and I had a summer job selling ice cream. Before I left we went shopping for fun stationary to write letters to each other over the six weeks. I think the stationary had snails on, we liked snails! 😀 I was never a very good letter writer but I remember enjoying sitting down to write out the things I had been doing, and looked forward to getting Julia’s letters in return.

Well thanks to Viking I had the opportunity to write a letter again. They put together a campaign for World Letter Writing day where bloggers are matched with an international blogger pen pal. Viking sent me a whole box of Viking stationary goodies to help write my letter and to be honest I didn’t do everything justice, I could have gotten a whole lot more creative but with my baby girl only being 4 weeks old I haven’t had as much spare time as usual. But I did write my letter, which was a little difficult for me as I never know what to tell people about myself (will they even care :D). My matched pen pal is called Karin and she blogs at DO-ITeria her blog is bright and full of colourful DIYs and yummy recipes just like mine. 🙂 I haven’t gotten her reply letter yet but I’m looking forward to when I do!

Do you have a pen pal? Or have you ever? Maybe this World Letter Wring Day you should sit down, pick up a pen and write a letter to a friend. Just imagine their face when they have something fun to read arrive in the post!
