We have lived in our home for 10 months now and I have so many changes to share with you that have taken place since my ground floor tour. One of those things is our wall length Scaffolding Shelves.
You might remember from our previous home, Roman Bank that we had Billy Bookcases in our living room. These were the focal point of the room but when we moved here to The terraced house the bookcases did not fit. I was absolutely gutted as I had only just finished the living room before we had to leave Roman Bank and I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to it. There was nothing I could do about it though (and believe me, I tried every variation of furniture position possible to try and fit those bookcases in) and I just had to have a think about what I could do in this space to make a new focal point.
One of my favourite Instagram accounts belongs to Jade Doutch and she has these incredible scaffolding board shelves in her living room and I decided that that is what I would use as my inspiration for this room. You can see Jade Dutch’s shelves by clicking below.
She also has a whole highlight on how she put them up so I used the same brackets that she did from eBay. I ordered 6 of these Iron scaffolding shelf brackets. Just make sure that you order the right size for the boards that you buy. We ordered our boards from a local scaffolding yard and they were £20 each. Our walls were just over 12 foot so we ordered 13 foot boards and cut them down slightly.
Below you can see the wall that we were going to add the shelves to. We made sure we knew exactly what our plan was before we got started. I knew I wanted two shelves and I wanted to be able to reach them both easily but at the same time have a big enough gap between the two so I could put taller items on them. I also needed the bottom shelf to be higher than the top of our chair.
This picture is from before we decorated but we have now painted the walls in Caramel latte by Dulux. We actually used kitchen paint because I was set on this colour and then could only find it in a kitchen paint formula but it painted fine. 😀
Once we had worked out how high we wanted our bottom shelf we used masking tape and a spirit level to mark out where it would go and we then used this as our guide to put up the brackets. We added a bracket in the centre and then one each end around 9 inches from the wall edge. This specific measurement was because there was a section of the wall plaster boarded about 10 inches in on one side and I wanted to make sure it was going into the brick wall. But the measurements worked out at a pretty good spacing for the brackets in the end.
I cannot tell you how excited I was at this point to add the board! We had already sanded and stained our board in a light oak colour and it was ready to go. I just want to mention too that the brackets came with all the fixings you need to fit it to the wall and to fit the board to it.
We repeated the process for the second one and here they are! I would like to tell you that I got these styled up straight away but they did in fact stay empty for weeks 😀 I want to write a separate post with the step by step process of how I styled them and share some of my styling tips but for now I will just skip to the good part and show you my fully styled, Wall Length Scaffolding Shelves.
These shelves turned out to be everything that I hoped and more. They are such a focal point in our living room and they make the room feel so much cosier. This was such a big blank wall before and honestly I can’t think of a better way to have filled it. Everyone who has come into our home has commented on them and I’m just so proud of how they look.
