Hello Everybody and welcome back to my blog. Today’s post is a room reveal which are always one of my favourites to share. The utility room or the laundry room is a space that I spend a lot of time in and we’re only a family of four! Why is the wash basket always overflowing? I’m sure someone else is sneaking their clothes into my piles 😀 I had a vision for this room as soon as we moved in and I’ve been waiting a long time to bring this Green Laundry Room Makeover to life.
The best place to start is always at the beginning so first I’ll give you a little reminder of the space. I first shared this area in my Ground floor new home tour and you can see the pictures below.
So as you can see this space comes off from the kitchen and leads through to the downstairs shower room. It’s only a very small space made smaller by the fact that it’s the only place we could fit our mammoth fridge freezer. The washer/dryer is to the right next to the back door to the garden and the fridge freezer is on the left side where there is also a small amount of space to store laundry baskets etc. We have future plans to make better use of this left side of the room but they will have to wait for now. I created a solution to store coat hangers using shelf brackets above the radiator and between these photos being taken and starting the room makeover we also added a pole to the right for a place to dry washing. But other that that this is pretty much how the space has looked for a year. I picked the colour and style of wallpaper that I wanted for this room just weeks after we moved in to those paint tester patches have been there the whole year too! 😀
My vision for this space was to have a wallpaper on the back wall that would frame the door that leads to the shower room. I mentioned this before in my welsh dresser upcycle post as I used the same wallpaper on that piece of furniture as I have on the wall here. I also wanted to add some shelves above the washer dryer so that I had storage for laundry detergent etc but also a little space to style and make the room feel nicer.
If you don’t already know I recently started a YouTube channel and I documented the process of this room in my Laundry Room Makeover post which I’ve added in below. I know some people prefer things in video form.
I do love watching videos on YouTube but I do also love having still photos so that I can have a good long look at all the details and for all of the people who feel the same here are the after photos of the Green Laundry Room Makeover for you!
So here is the washer dryer corner now! The beautiful green that we chose is called Overtly Olive and it’s by Dulux. Green is my favourite colour and it just makes me so happy to see some colour on the walls. At our previous home most rooms stayed white due to our contract so it’s been a really long time since there was any colour.
We also added these shelves which I found on amazon for just £18.99 and they give us some much needed storage space. I now finally have somewhere to put all my laundry supplies (I like to have a choice of detergents, don’t judge me 😀 ) and I decanted some things into new bottles and jars just to make things more aesthetically pleasing as it’s open storage. The jars with the green lids we already owned. They used to have teal lids and you might recognise them from the Roman Bank kitchen, I gave the lids a fresh coat of paint to match the walls though. The detergent and softener bottles are from B&M as is the small jar with cork lid. The black rail is from Ikea and we already owned that too but it hadn’t found a home in this house yet. I added a faux plant in one pot for some decoration and the other pot is actually for any odd socks that I find! Decor wise I just added this really cute reed diffuser that has a small stem and bunny tail to the shelves, it was just £5 from B&M. Then the two pictures I put together using frames and dried stems I already owned but both are still available from B&M. The frames are £3 each and the small bunch of stems (I split one between the 2 frames) was also £3.
You can see the before mentioned pole in these photos and we purchased it from Screwfix. For the pole and brackets I think it came to around £10 but this pole has been invaluable to help us dry laundry over the winter! Future plans will involve adding a counter over the washer dryer but for now this looks so much better and it’s much more enjoyable to do the Laundry. But are you ready for the wallpaper?
I literally smile every time I walk through and see this wall. It is everything I planned out in my head and more. The green leaves match in with the paint perfectly but the white background really helps to brighten up the small room. The black pole also really pops against the paper and you know how I love a black accent even if it is the smallest of details. We added a jute mat in front of the back door and this was just £8 from Home Bargains. My wash basket also fits in with this room so well. We’ve owned it for years now but it is from Ikea. The light shade was a total bargain at just £7 on clearance at B&M and ties in with the neutral details like the rug, basket and wooden shelves. to the left of the shower room door my coat hanger storage solution looks even better now they blend into the wall more. I gave the brackets a light sand and painted them with two coats of the wall paint. And I think that is pretty much all the details!
